The technical reason for using the front channels is quite simple. If you do use your fader to adjust the sound, fading from the rear to front will cause a voltage loss, lowering the volume of the Tube. Using the front speakers will prevent this from happening.
If you never plan to use the fader to adjust the sound stage then using the rear channel for a signal source is fine.
