I was a big fan of the EL line myself. They were inexpensive, installer friendly, and sounded good.

You could also consider getting an amplified tube. That's an all-in-one solution that would save you space and would still sound awesome.

That's an awesome comparison that I couldn't find the link to. I wanted to point to it on here too. Keep in mind that all that measures is how long the product will last, not how good of a sound...

Are you using the auto turn on or did you run a turn on wire from the back of the radio? It's much better to use the lead from the back of the radio as the turn on instead of the loop.
